Although vaccines are becoming more available we still need to continue following restrictions, starting with wearing a mask. Lauren Endsley, a grad student at La Tech, teamed up with VISTA to create the “Culture of Caring” mask buttons. Lauren wanted to create a mask to “serve as a reminder to not only wear a mask but that by wearing a mask you are doing something to help out our community and keep others safe.”
To promote mask wearing around campus, VISTA is holding a selfie contest to win VISTA merch. To enter, you first have to pick up a mask button for free on campus at Carson Taylor Hall, F.J. Taylor Visual Arts Center, Woodard Hall, George T. Madison Hall, and University Hall. Then post a selfie on Instagram tagging @LATECHVISTA and use #VISTAMASK. |
The VISTA Center is currently working on adding the third children’s book to The Journey Series following the success of The Journey of Dr. John Stewart IV and The Journey of a Stem Cell. Just like the previous two, Journey Through the Human Heart is designed to teach and inspire elementary school-aged children.
Journey through the Human Heart is completely focused on the heart – how it works and why it is important to exercise and eat right. The VISTA Center teamed up with the Northeast Louisiana Children’s Museum in Monroe, Louisiana to create a book to complement the Museum’s new interactive heart exhibit. The museum received a grant from Living Well, a nonprofit organization that serves northeast Louisiana, to design and purchase a traveling inflatable heart exhibit where children can actually go inside and explore the inside of the heart. The book offers children an opportunity to take a piece of the exhibit home. |
The VISTA Center has strived to stay connected with students to present a virtual learning opportunity about biology, art, and visual communication. Recently the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) awarded the center a $1000 Outreach Compass grant.

Just as we are all excited to enter the winter season and cooler temperatures, so too is the flu. To protect our campus community from the flu this year VISTA, the School of Biological Sciences, the Division of Nursing, and the Department of Health Informatics and Information Management worked together to raise awareness and even brought flu shots on Tech’s campus.
Flu shots are always encouraged, but this year due to COVID-19 the risk of increased complications due to the flu is even higher. With similar symptoms and the possibility of contracting both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time, the results could be devastating to individuals and the health care system. Dr. Jamie Newman, VISTA Center Co-director, realized how overwhelmed hospitals and clinics could get this season so she wanted to start a Flu Shot Awareness campaign. |
In July of 2020, VISTA held a GEAR UP summer camp over Zoom Meeting focused on engaging students in-depth on how visuals can communicate complex ideas. Throughout the week students in the 5th through 7th grades learned the biology of SARS-CoV2 and COVID-19 and basic drawing skills. These skills the students learned were combined to create a final client-based project for Ms. Angel Sims’, Camp Assistant Director, second-grade class.
