The VISTA Center has strived to stay connected with students to present a virtual learning opportunity about biology, art, and visual communication. Recently the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) awarded the center a $1000 Outreach Compass grant. After seeing the success of the GEAR UP camp, VISTA received the award to host more workshops for elementary and middle school students in Caddo Parish, Union Parish, Jackson Parish, Lincoln Parish, and Ouachita Parish to express their talents and create an impactful illustration for the community. Since the workshops have been virtual due to COVID-19 the grant is being put towards buying art supplies for the students to complete their projects for the event and any drawing they pursue in the future. These art supplies include drawing pencils, sharpeners, erasers, a sketchbook, and a bag to hold the supplies. In addition, each of the students received a copy of The Journey of a Stem Cell, a book written and illustrated by Louisiana Tech students. After the workshop, the student’s work will not only be incorporated into the final project for the community, but they will also be leaving with a strong knowledge of the impact of visual communication.
