In July of 2020, VISTA held a GEAR UP summer camp over Zoom Meeting focused on engaging students in-depth on how visuals can communicate complex ideas. Throughout the week students in the 5th through 7th grades learned the biology of SARS-CoV2 and COVID-19 and basic drawing skills. These skills the students learned were combined to create a final client-based project for Ms. Angel Sims’, Camp Assistant Director, second-grade class.
   The final projects will be displayed in the form of posters, PowerPoint presentations, and fliers. 
    VISTA Center’s main goal is to offer real-world experiences while utilizing their skills to benefit others in the community.  The VISTA Center was able to get the students out of their comfort zone, gain confidence in thinking creatively, and work together to create a piece that will impact the community. ​

Image 1:Washing Hands Prevents the Spread of Germs
  This image was to showcase the importance of washing your hands. Not only does it make the point to wash your hands, but the students understood the importance of fighting germs by washing hands. The image shows the power soap has to destroy germs keeping kids safe from infection.

   The second image is a reminder to students to help them understand that their actions will protect themselves and their friends stay safe. The group worked together to create the actions listed in the images and a different camp participant created each component of the illustration.
