The Journey of a Stem Cell is an interactive children’s book and educational resource designed to bring the excitement, challenge, and wonder of scientific research to a young audience. The book was created by an interdisciplinary student team, written by graduate student Rebecca Hodnett and illustrated by Maddie Dearman, a Studio Art, and Graphic Design major. The book introduces readers to the importance of stem cells, scientific research, and regenerative medicine, and showcases opportunities available in STEM, scientific communication, and related fields. Students can engage with interactive STEMQuests throughout the book for a unique learning experience that the author’s hope inspires their own scientific journey. The Journey of a Stem Cell is an interdisciplinary effort to expand scientific communication, support stem cell research, and excite a new generation to become a part of this growing area of research and medicine.

This book is dedicated to you – our reader who opened it to start on a journey of scientific exploration and education.  The potential in new discoveries inspires all of us. With this book, we want the future of biology and medicine to inspire the next generation of scientists, doctors, engineers, artists, astronauts, and educators.

This book – created when people in different fields and with different interests worked together – was sparked by our passion for education and a desire that you’ll find your own part in this emerging area of science and research.

Enjoy the journey!
