A Louisiana Tech University VISTA Scholar, Jacob Broussard, had the amazing opportunity to partner with Dr. John Stewart IV and Tech Associate Professor of Biology, Dr. Jamie Newman, to write an interactive children’s book. The Journey of Dr. John Stewart IV tells the story of Dr. Stewart while also learning activities for children. Jacob Broussard is a co-author and illustrator of this 18-page book.
Jacob was approached with the opportunity to create a children’s book on a La Tech Alumni, Dr. Stewart. After doing his research, Jacob decided to take on the task since it was a new project he could put his artistic view into.
His first step in creating this children’s book was to find the artistic style which was done by sketching Dr. Stewart as a child. After, he and others working on the book went through a rough page by page walkthrough to figure out the perfect layout.
Slowly, but surely the book was coming along. This process began during the summer of 2019 and was released in October. A child psychologist was brought in on the project to give ways for the book to engage with children and get them thinking. As the writing and illustrating process wrap up, Jacob Broussard, Dr. Jamie Newman, and Dr. John Stewart IV created a book to inspire children to follow their dreams and work hard to achieve their goals.
While The Journey of Dr. John Stewart IV was a successful project for Jacob, he has many other projects as well.
Jacob Broussard is a studio art major with the thought of eventually minoring in business or graphic design. Eventually, his passion and dedication for art were noticed by Nick Bustamante, the director of the VISTA Center, and soon became a VISTA Scholar.

Being a VISTA Scholar led Jacob to many opportunities to work with outside clients such as working on a First Responders manual with Dr. Elizabeth Angeli, a Professor at Marquette University, and upcoming work with Lincoln Health Foundation.
Outside of VISTA, he works on different types of media. After Jacob took a conceptual design class he started basing his work on “evoking a response from the viewer, so it will stick with them.” In the past, he has created videos to get a response from others but currently, he is creating a 24-page novel for adult viewers that is a commentary on certain issues in society.
After Jacob graduates, he would prefer to stay on the freelancing side of art.
After all, is said and done, Jacob Broussard believes “ students coming into the program who are uncomfortable with working with clients can find comfort since VISTA is the perfect environment to experience client work.”
Before he became a VISTA Scholar, Jacob worked with clients on freelance projects, but working with VISTA clients has prepared him professionally for a career after he graduates.
